Looking after Your Vessel

We have seen a significant number of claims with vessels hitting the reef or rocks. Many of these claims can be very expensive. Whist rocks don’t generally move, It is important to always keep in mind that tides and lake levels do change. For this reason a safe passage one day can quickly change. Care should be taken not just in unfamiliar waters but also in areas and locations regularly visited.

Immersion of water is an increasing problem This is either when the Boat is on its trailer and the bung has not been removed or the bung hole has blocked with leaves or the like. Making sure the trailer is elevated and higher at the stern as well as regularly checking that rainwater is not accumulating in the Hull lessens the risk of damage.

There has also been an increase in Burglary/Theft claims, in particular theft of auxiliaries. It is really important you take reasonable care of your property. Motors not bolted through the transom must be protected by a recognised ant-theft locking device to prevent unauthorised removal, or no cover applies. When not in use, your auxiliary is best stored in your boot or garage.

Your vessel is particularly vulnerable to theft losses, when it is not in use. Make sure you lock it away otherwise immobilize the trailer so that it cannot be stolen.
